Our Sardinia travel package includes a special visit from Domus de Maria to the south coast. Here, you can enjoy a brief break from the summer sun by touring the cool Zuddas caves of Sardinia. Please keep in mind that since the internal temperatures of the caves lies around 16°C with high humidity, it will be prudent to wear appropriate footwear and clothing.
As we drive towards our destination, we’ll stop at a checkpoint, where you’ll be provided with photograph-worthy views of the Bay of Tuerredda. We’ll travel a bit more to Cape Malfatano, another checkpoint with views of Capo Teulada, Capo Sapartivento, and the bays surrounding them.
After these detours, we’ll pass the Piscini lookout tower and reach Isola Rossa. This is where we divert from the coastal road and drive past the Teulada oleander plants. If our tour is set for Monday morning, you’ll be able to experience the local market, only open once a week and filled with local Sardinian products. Here, you can take some time to browse through the local cheeses, sausages, fruits, vegetables, wines, and various handicrafts.
We will leave the market and drive on the mountain road towards Santadi, which will also offer a breathtaking view of Teulada and Porto Pino. When we finally reach the Zuddas caves, we’ll take a short break and provide some refreshments for you.
The caves are tremendous inside and out. The geological characteristics are unique to Sardinia, as well as its other features. You can even see a rodent skeleton inside that, until the 18th century, was only native to Sardinia and Corsica. If we drive a bit more, around half a mile inside the Monte Meana zone, we’ll come across another large cave that has five large rooms. This particular cave has been ornamented with stalactite-stalagmite columns, as well as walls layered with white aragonite.
Once you’re completely satisfied with this secret Sardinia wonder, we will drive along the mountain road so that you have a great view of the forests and Mediterranean flora on route back to your hotel.
